Hoyle 5: Classic Games

Walkthrough

Note - These are the rules for Klondike, which is a common version of Solitaire.

Rules

The objective of Klondike is to play as many cards as possible to the foundations. To begin the game, the cards are dealt to the seven columns and the stock (the stack of undealt cards) is placed on the table. Cards from the stock are flipped over one at a time (or three at a time if that option is set) and placed into a waste pile.

Cards may be moved from the waste pile to the columns and around the columns and if certain rules are followed:
- Build columns in descending order (K, Q, J, 10, 9, etc.) and in alternating color (red, black, red, etc.).
- To move cards from one column to another column, all face up cards must be moved as a single unit. The top card of the unit must be one rank lower and of the alternate color of the lowest card of the column that the unit is being moved to.
- Cards from the waste pile are moved one at a time and may be moved to any column as long as the building rules are followed.
- Cards cannot be played from a column to the waste pile.
- Empty columns may only be filled with kings.
- Cards may be moved to a foundation from the columns or the waste pile.
- Only completely uncovered cards may be moved to foundations.
- Build foundations in ascending order and of the same suit. Once a card is played to a foundation, it may not be moved again.

Play ends when there are no more moves left to be made.

Options

You can choose to flip 1 or 3 cards at once from the stock, as well as to show the last 3 flipped cards or only the last card (top card)/

You can choose to use the 1 point/card scoring system or the $5/card and $50/deck scoring system.

You can choose to go through the deck just once, three times or unlimited times.

In the options menu, you can also choose to re-deal the same deck, deal a new deck or undo your latest move.

Scoring

There are two ways of scoring Klondike (selectable from the options panel):
- 1 POINT PER CARD - Each card played to a foundation scores one point.
- $50 DECK / $5 CARD: Each card played to a foundation scores $5. At the beginning of each hand, $50 is deducted from your net score to "pay" for your deck.
